  • Here it is, another Monday. Had a good Christmas ... mellow, light and fun. Lots of good drink, good food and good friends. This will be another short week, since it's New Years .... New Year's Eve just happens to be my birthday, so I'll be making my way to Long Beach to Roscoe's Chicken n Waffles for dinner. Great way to kill of the old year!

    How was your Christmas holiday?

    DG

  • Here's to a very merry Christmas!

    Your Pal,

    DG

  • Here it is Christmas eve, 2003. I hope that you and yours have the best Christmas this year, and may you be truly blessed in your lives (regardless of your religious conviction), and see the possibilities that each moment brings in this life. Time is far too short to spend it worrying about what has happened in the past or what will happen in the future. The best gift you have is this very moment in time.

Live it to the fullest, and be the gift you already are to those around you.

  • We are celebrating Christmas with the Outlaws today ... we do this every year because it gets too damn hard to drive 100 miles on Christmas day. What's nice about this is, we'll have Christmas with the family and on the 25th, we'll have a few orphaned friends over for dinner and drinks. It's a nice way to make the holidays restful and relaxed.

    Have a good Sunday.

Oh by the way .... Return of the King absolutely rocked!

  • So because I'm a total geek and have a ton of car stereo crap in my Beetle, I had to jump start the car and drive around looking for a specialty stereo shop that had my battery. I found it ... not too far down the street at Al & Eds. The downside? $200 later, and it's not going to be done till after 2:00pm.

You know, I really sound like a whiner over the last few posts. I'm sorry ... I'll try to lighten up.

  • So now I feel good enough to go to work. So I step outside and get in my car and discover my battery is dead. How's that working for me? So because I'm a totally geek and bought a high-perfomance audio batter, I have to wait till 10:00am for the local stereo shop to open so I can get a new one.

Even though it's Thursday, it's starting to feel like Monday

  • Okay, so it wasn't the flu, but a thraot infection. A damned good one too. Woke up Sunday morning and it hurt so bad, almost made me wqant to cry. So there I was popping advil and darvocet to try to take the edge off ... to no avail. Damn it! I knew there was a reason NOT to take drugs suring my college years. Now I've got such a high tolerance for pain meds, nothing seems to touch the problem.

So I've been home now, drinking hot tea and taking naps. How's that working for me?

Sorry I'm grumpy, but I don't do well with pain. I'll check back in later.

  • Well, I finally got that damned flu that everyone's getting. I'm hoping it doen't kill me. I'm going back to bed. I'll try to write more tomorrow.

  • HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY DOOM!

My life was changed forever on December 10th, 1993. Id Software released the computer game DOOM. Back in 1993, the hot computer was a 486 running a 66 MHz, and DOOM took full advantage of all that power. It was a DOS-based game that revolutionized the notion of immerse game play. And thus the first person shooter was born. I would stay up until 3 am playing this damned game.

Hard to believe that this was cutting-edge graphics back 10 years go. Scenes like this used to scare the crap outta me during late night play.

I was lucky enough to go visit Id Software just after the release of DOOM, while they were working on DOOM II. Got to meet all the programmers and learn some of the more interesting things about the development of the game.

Over the last 3 years, there have been rumblings about the guys re-doing DOOM. Technology has grown to a level of startling realism, and DOOM was the perfect vehicle to demonstrate just how far the boundaries could be pushed. Thus, the formal announcement for DOOM III was released.

The whole idea behind DOOM III was to terrify the hell out of you. And judging from the atmosphere and detail in the game, it probably will.Sure is light years from the old one, yes?

Am I looking forward to the new DOOM? Damn straight! I build my new computer to exceed the recommended hardware requirements for DOOM III, and am chomping at the bit to get that thing loaded and ready to play. If you'd like a taste (and have a decent broadband connection) go download the high-rez DOOM III trailer.

But you know, I still wax poetic about the late nights staying up killing pixelated zombies and demons from hell. I still have my favorite levels from the original, and you can still find some people running DOOM servers. It's amazing that a small (at the time) company revolutionized the industry.

Anyway, Just thought I'd walk down memory lane with a longing look to the future. Carry on.
